Artist Statement:

In my artistic practice, I aimed to focus all of my attention towards my own self-reflections from the past & future. Throughout my time at Baruch as a new media minor, I have created self-portraits depicting how I have seen myself throughout childhood and teen years, animations regarding my childhood dog, and a website painting my life in an HTML file. This semester I decided on creating a passionate project over how life could have been like if my parents chose to settle down in a different part of the world. In other words, I decided to create vision boards for what it would’ve been like. However, I also choose to view this project as a reflection and projection of the possibilities ahead. While I wasn’t born or raised in these places, considering I am now just a few months away from graduation, seeing these images together represents the potential of places I may choose to explore as I begin to enter such a powerful and moving time in my life.

Project Description:

My semester-long project for NMA 4900 depicts a series of vision boards displayed on a website of what life would have been like if my parents had decided to take a different route instead of settling down in New York City. Vision boards are best defined as a series of pictures created to envision a positive future and have a clear direction as to where you may want your life to be headed for the next few months. These boards can be made as collage in a singular sheet/board or attached by thumb tacks on a corkboard. The goal of this project was to tap into the unknown life that could have been, my parents have family & friends in Canada, Mexico, Texas, California, and Amsterdam. With that being said they have had the opportunity to follow certain family members and friends to those locations. However, they ultimately settled down in Queens, New York. I was fortunate enough to visit most of the locations to see family members and I can’t help but wonder how similar we would have been and how different I would've been. Through this project, I’m creating a vision of what my life could have looked like had things turned out differently and I wasn't born and raised in New York as well as places I would’ve loved to experience growing up in. This project also serves as a form of my own personal manifestations of my future travel goals as I begin to explore new places after graduation.
