Medium: Video and Digital Photography

Artist Statement:

Jessica Philip (Artist name Angel X) is a Multimedia artist based in New York City. While many of her pieces range from medium to medium, she has a special love for digital art, graphic design, and videography. Many of her pieces explore her interest in bright colors, visual expression, fashion, and technology. Using different aesthetics, Jessica aims to capture self-portraiture within the realities that she creates. Through the lens of her self-portraiture, she often wonders how others may view her.

Project Description:

My piece “Covered by The Rain” reflects on the struggle to create as an artist when faced with a period of art block. It explores how looking for inspiration and finding your “voice” again can feel like an internal battle. By featuring moments of still digital photography and self-portraiture within a video, it allows the viewer to experience parts of my creative process and emotions. As the video progresses, it uses rain as a metaphor for a safe “blanket” providing comfort and serenity. Rain is also representative of God’s (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit) inspiration, renewal, and blessings upon my life during these times of struggle, ultimately showing that the rain has become my safe space of quiet reflection.
