HOMECOMING

Artist: Mina Kim

Medium: Video

Artist Statement:

Throughout my pieces of work, I focus on taking inspiration from the small elements of nature that are accessible to us in our urbanized city. I love drawing inspiration from the organic shapes and sounds of trees, plants, and animals. My identity as a first-generation Korean American, born and raised in New York City, also plays a significant role in my creative process. My work offers moments of escape from urban life, aiming to evoke a sense of peace and a dream-like trance while weaving in subtle, unsettling elements. I use my experience in video editing, animation, illustration, and web design to mirror the similarities and differences between organic and human-made aspects.

Project Description:

Inspired by "Bird" by Lee Nalchi, this video project blends animation and live painting performance, combining oil crayon drawings animations withacrylic painting. Through props, music, and accessories, I highlight my Korean heritage, while referencing my American and New York identity throughout the video. This project explores the duality of my Korean American identity, where traditional Korean culture and personal expression intertwine. Through this project I aim to present a joyful representation of who I am, embracing both my cultural roots and the movement that shapes me.
