Artist Statement:
In all of the projects that I’ve completed so far within New Media, I tend to stick to concepts of the internet and digital landscapes. As someone majoring in Digital Marketing and part of a generation that has never known life before the Internet, it’s been a big part of my life and what I’m most familiar with. I feel the most comfortable when my art is entirely digital, and I feel like it speaks the most to who I am. My current project is similar. Although I feel like the internet is a big part of me, I also acknowledge how harmful and toxic it can be, and that’s what my current project touches on.
Project Description:
The project story of Amanda will focus on the story of Amanda Todd and the effect that cyberbullying had on her. The idea for this project stemmed from observing the internet currently and throughout history. I feel that everywhere on the internet has become increasingly filled with aggression and violence. I plan to emphasize Amanda’s case, remind people of this story, and that their words have an impact. I would like to reiterate that even though you can’t see beyond someone’s icon or profile picture, you still interact with a real person beyond that screen. Amanda Todd’s story was an event that I lived through, and it sticks out in my mind whenever I think of cyberbullying.
